The Skin Type Solution

Dr. Baumann, M.D. dermatologist from Miami Beach has written one of the most thorough skincare books I have ever seen. She has broken skintypes in four distinct categories: Wrinkled or Tight, Pigmented or Non-Pigmented, Resistant versus Wrinkled, and Oily versus Dry. The quiz in chapter two is extensive with accurate results indicated at the end- what skintype you have! For me, I was dry, resistant, pigmented and wrinkled!! “The Neglected Skin Type” UGGG.. That does not sound positive to me. And it is so TRUE!! I let myself get burned all the time as a kid. I remember going to school with huge sun blisters on my shoulders because I spent hours in the water at the beach without reapplying sunscreen. Dr. Baumann is right is making the statement, that our skin would be far better off if we (I) had just taken better care of it. It’s time to start taking care of our skin cause you know you don’t want to look like Grandma at age 50! My kids will be just barely 13!! I need to be looking As Good As Possible. I don’t want my kid thinking he’s gotta frumpy lumpy OLD mom!!

The best part about this book is after you determine your skintype she recommends products based on ingredients. Ingredients that should be in your products and ingredients that should not!! For my D,R,P,W skin type, she recommends retinoids for the prevention of wrinkles, however, she stresses the importance of perscription strength for this ingredient to be effective. The other important ingredients include vitamin C, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, and geen tea, both are antioxidants which well help fight free radical damage.

In addition to the recommended ingredients, she also has steps listed for the morning and evening to follow. For those of us who neglected our skin for years on end, it is imperative to NOW apply sunscreen of SPF 15 every single day. Also, an exfoliator is suggested to remove the top layer of dead skin cells regularly. What I love best about this book is she lists a significant number of proven ingredients to fight specific problems! Copper peptide, coenzyme Q10, green tea extract just to name a few- are all in Arbonne’s products! Kojic Acid is the key ingredient in Arbonne’s anti-aging eye cream and it is a natural skin lightener for pigmented skin.

Finally, Dr. Baumann listed ingredients to avoid based on your skin type. Alcohol, mineral oil, formaldehyde, and sodium laurel sulfate are just a few of the ingredients that in general should be avoided and she listed specific ingredients to avoid for each skin type. In the end, the book is thorough, and comprehensive for all skin types and problems.
